A Coconino County jury has found a former Williams Police lieutenant not guilty of two aggravated assault charges after a short deliberation following a 2 day trial.
Romero was charged with 2 felony counts stemming from the arrest of a theft suspect in October of 2022. Romero was accused of dragging the handcuffed suspect to the ground causing him to strike his head.
Romero was originally reprimanded for the incident but the new Police Chief reopened the case and the Arizona Department of Public Safety handled the new investigation. Based on the findings of the new investigation, the Coconino County Attorney asked the Mohave County Attorney to look at the case. The Mohave County Attorney filed 2 felony charges against Romero in Flagstaff.
Despite numerous witnesses and a significant amount of evidence, the entire proceeding was over in less than 3 days.
The jury deliberated Thursday morning and returned no guilty verdicts on both counts after lunch.
