Williams Police Department Lieutentant John Romero has been fired as the result an investigation into his actions in the arrest of a petty theft suspect that was caught on a police body camera.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Yavapai Sheriff’s Office conducted separate investigations into the incident at the request of the new Williams Police Chief. According to City Officials with knowledge of the investigations, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office recommended termination of Romero after they looked into the incident from an Internal Affairs perspective.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is expected to turn over the results of their investigation to the Coconino County Attorney’s Office in the coming days. Sources close to the investigation believe it is likely Romero will be criminally charged for his actions in the arrest of Brian Lopez and his subsequent injuries.
