APS WILDFIRE MITIGATION PLAN INCLUDES POWER SHUT OFFS

Arizona Public Service (APS), the largest electricity provider in Arizona, briefed the Williams City Council April 24th on the utilities Wildfire Mitigation Plan. That plan includes the potential for electricity to be shut off to customers during extreme weather events like high winds.

Logan Troutman from APS introduced the newest tool in their wildfire mitigation efforts, the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). This proactive measure involves turning off power in extreme weather conditions to protect communities and infrastructure from fires sparked by power lines or utility equipment.

Based on historical data, APS estimates they might need to implement a PSPS about four times in five years, with an average duration of 20 hours.

Dean emphasized that PSPS events would be predictable, with advanced communication to customers and coordination with county emergency management. She also mentioned that APS is working on an interactive map to help customers determine if a PSPS might impact them.

Williams City Council members asked questions about the specific triggers for a PSPS, the geographical scope of shutoffs, and the potential impact on commercial areas in Williams. Troutman provided clarifications and assured the council that they would continue to refine their communication strategies and work closely with local authorities.

Janet Dean, public affairs manager at APS said the program began last year with 16 power lines in northern Arizona and is expanding to include 65 power lines across northern Arizona.
